Chunky Knits and Flowers for Fall/Winter 2012/13... History of My DIY

I made this sweater lo-o-ong time ago. With the trend of chunky knits and large flowers print this Fal/Winter 2012/13, I will be wearing this oversized sweater a lot,  as soon as the cold front from Canada will push down our temperature close to 40F. 

Many-many years ago, when I found this beautiful flowers pattern in the magazine, I decided to make this wool sweater, no matter what.  Although, I was not sure if I will be able to finish it, because it looked very complicated.  When doing knitting project like that, with colorful pattern, it does require a lot of patience and very time consuming.  However, I did finish that project and now, every time when cold weather season comes, I am very happy to have this TIMELESS piece made by myself.  Soon it will become vintage.  The fact is, such classic elements as flowers, black color, chunky knits - never out of style, really.  Only when it is in style, like this coming fall, much more people will be wearing this combination, and when fashion designers will swith to somethign else, piece like this will be even more unique.

Orchids ... Three Ice Cubes Trick

As we were getting ready for the wedding day, our potted orchids arrived.  Since potted orchids have special meaning for the bride and groom, it was decided to have a LOT of them on the tables and then give them away as wedding favor for the guests.  I have never seeing so many blooming orchids in one place.  It was a sea of blooming orchids and IT WAS BEAUTIFUL.

Since we had to keep them in a good shape for the wedding day,  we wanted to know the best way to take care of them.  What we learned is that orchids are easy to grow but the only complicated part is to figure how much to water them.  Then we learned a trick.  Did you know this?   Thee cubes of ice per week is the perfect amount of water to keep orchids healthy.

This is what professional orchids grower saying: Emily Chockley of Green Circle Growers explained that the company was looking for a way to simplify care and encourage more people to give orchids a try: “After multiple tests at our greenhouse facility and with consumers, we’ve found that three ice cubes (equivalent to ¼ cup of melted water) is the perfect amount of water per week,” she said.

Orchids hate to stay constantly wet, so ice cubes are a great solution because they melt slowly enough to distribute the water throughout the soil, leaving little left at the bottom of the pot, Ms. Chockley went on to explain. And ice cubes melt quickly enough to not harm the roots.

One way to know if the plant is getting enough water is to look at the roots in the pot. If the roots appear green, then the orchid is well watered. However, if the orchid roots appear white or grayish, then the orchid can use additional ice cubes.

Something Borrowed, Something Blue... Bridal Bouquet

Summer is THE season for weddings.  Over the weekend I was busy with the wedding of one of the most beautiful bride.  Now you understand why I was looking for tear proof mascara

I remember, when we were thinking about her bridal bouquet design, we  looked over so many examples and different options!  Finally, the bride decided that she would love to carry down the isle the bouquet that is very full but not too packed with the same type of flowers, have a lot of different textures, includes orchids, no roses, have many variations of  white color, have plenty of green color, and have something blue.

When her bouquet arrived on Saturday, the day of the wedding, we knew right away that her florist could not have created more perfect bouquet for this bride.  The bouquet was exactly what the bride was looking for and it was beautiful!  Today I am happy to share this design with you.  Who knows, maybe you will love it too and it might help you to find the right idea for the bridal bouquet design if you need one!

Art in Bloom at MIA... Part 3

Recently I posted  Part 1   and  Part 2  of the Annual Art in Bloom exhibition organized by  Minneapolis Institute of Arts   Today I have more pictures from that exhibition for you to enjoy and maybe even get some ideas for you flower arrangements.

Art in Bloom 2012 at MIA ... Part 2

Last week I posted  Part 1   of the Annual Art in Bloom exhibition organized by  Minneapolis Institute of Arts   Although there are some limitations of taking pictures in the museum setting, it is my believe that having some pictures is better than no pictures.  I hope my photo report will allow you to feel the atmosphere of the exhibition and maybe even give you some ideas for you flower arrangements.

Art in Bloom 2012 at the Minneapolis Institute of Art...Part 1

Every year  Minneapolis Institute of Arts   organizes annual Art in Bloom exhibition.  This four-day event challenges floral designers to create their vision of the Museum artworks.

This is how it works: Florists choose what paintings or the sculpture they like and then recreate their vision of the artwork with live flower arrangements.  I captured with my camera the result of this creative process.  It is interesting to see the actual artwork and florist's creation side by side.  I definitely could see the inspiration of artwork reflected in flower arrangements.  I found many versions of the Museum's artwork recreated in flowers that I liked and I have to say - the museum smelled beautiful!   

This year it was 29th year of Art in Bloom.  I took a lot of pictures, and since I would like to show as much as possible to you, I divided all images into parts and will be posting them under "Art in Bloom" title.  Today I have prepared Part 1 for you.  As you can see I shot some arrangement from different angles so you can see them better and appreciate the beauty of all colors and textures presented in bouquets.  Share with me your favorites!

Spring is here.... Silk flowers accessory

Spring/Summer 2012 fashion season literally blooms in flowers.  Designers using flowers everywhere in different shapes, colors and forms.  Flower patterns on fabrics, silk flowers used as pins, bracelets or hair accessories, you name it.  Thinking of embracing this "flower power" trend I made some white camellia silk flowers.  I am not sure yet if I will be using it as a pin or a hair clip, or maybe both? Black and White

As I was looking for visual examples of black/white colors for one of my projects, I decided to take a picture of the white cotton flowers in my handmade ceramic white vase. I have always loved the rough texture of this vase that was made by someone who is very dear to me. For this picture's background I used a piece of beautiful leather that was able to capture light reflection of the vase. I liked the way it came out. What do you think?
